Abstract

This study aims to analyze the deconstruction of the "self-reward" narrative on Instagram and review it through the perspective of Maqashid Shariah, specifically the principle of Hifdz al-Maal (preservation of wealth). In the digital era, Instagram has become a space of visual contestation that constructs lifestyle realities, where the term "self-reward" has undergone a shift in meaning—from a form of self-appreciation for mental health into an instrument of justification for consumptive behavior or isyraf (extravagance). This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of social media users. The results indicate that through the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization, social media shapes a collective perception that happiness is materialistic and must be achieved through financial transactions. From the Maqashid Shariah perspective, this phenomenon is seen as a threat to the sustainability of wealth because it ignores the Sharia scale of priorities, where the fulfillment of supplementary desires (tahsiniyat) often precedes the protection of future assets (hajiyat/dharuriyat). This study concludes the need to reposition the meaning of self-reward based on the values of qana’ah (contentment) and tawazun (balance), ensuring that the goal of preserving the soul (Hifdz al-Nafs) remains aligned with efforts to maintain individual economic stability (Hifdz al-Maal).
