Abstract

Environmental awareness is a critical issue in the context of sustainable development, including in the West Nusa Tenggara region, which faces challenges related to waste management and nature conservation. The Daarul Mujawwidin Ampenan Foundation, as an Islamic educational institution, has strategic potential to instill environmentally friendly values through an eco-theological approach, which integrates Islamic teachings with environmental sustainability practices. This study aims to explore the application of eco-theology at the Daarul Mujawwidin Ampenan Foundation, assess its impact on the ecological awareness of students and the surrounding community, and identify the challenges faced in supporting the NTB Asri (zero waste) program. The study employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentary analysis to gather rich and comprehensive data. The results indicate that the foundation has successfully integrated Islamic values into eco-theology practices through environmental education, greening initiatives, waste management, and the provision of clean water facilities using a religious approach. The application of eco-theology has proven to increase students’ awareness of ecological responsibility, encourage behavioral change among the surrounding community, and foster an understanding that caring for nature is part of worship. However, the main challenges faced include limited resources, low public awareness, and insufficient outreach regarding government programs. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening a curriculum grounded in environmental principles and Islamic values, fostering active collaboration with the government, and increasing community participation to optimize the implementation of eco-theology in support of the “NTB Asri” program and the “NTB Hijau” movement.
